The ancient adobe church at Las Trampas on the high road to Taos was built in the eighteenth century. Douglas Johnson’s painting of Las Trampas shows a candlelight procession going into the church on Christmas Eve in 1900. The night sky is filled with stars and the wooded foothills of the Sange de Cristo Mountains provide a dark background behind the thick church walls, plastered in real mud. Douglas Johnson has been painting in northern New Mexico for over forty years. Several of his paintings are now available as Christmas cards. Las Trampas is one of Susan’s favorites.
